Voice notes were built for twenty seconds
Hold to talk, release, done. That gesture is why WhatsApp won family chats from São Paulo to Lisbon to Mexico City. It is also why a choir rehearsal, a stand-up bit, or a teacher’s dictation feels broken inside the same app: the codec is aggressive, the message is trapped in one thread, and many clients still split long recordings. Forward it twice and the quality falls off a cliff.
Sending the file as a document avoids some compression, then creates a different mess — forty people download forty copies, phones fill up, and there is no stable URL to pin, to put on a status, or to drop in a channel. Manda Áudio (Manda Audio / Send Audio WhatsApp) publishes the audio as a page. You upload once. The URL is what travels.
What “no size limit” actually buys you
Language students send homework that lasts four minutes. Churches send the homily. Diaspora families send birthday voice memos that would otherwise be chopped into six notes. Because we do not ask for an account, the upload is as fast as picking a file on the phone. Because we do not cap megabytes, you are not negotiating with a progress bar invented for stickers.
The audio page carries the title you chose, a player that works in mobile browsers, a download link, and share buttons. Recipients stay inside WhatsApp until they tap; then they hear the original MP3, WAV, OGG, M4A or WebM. Plays feed the public ranking of most played clips. Duplicate files (byte-for-byte) are rejected so the ranking stays a list of unique pages, not clones.
When to keep the native voice note
Keep PTT for “I’m downstairs.” Switch to a link when the audio must be findable tomorrow, when it will be forwarded outside the original group, or when fidelity matters. The two tools stack; they do not compete.
Formats phones already know
MP3 is the lowest-friction export. M4A is what iPhone Voice Memos tend to produce. WAV is for the take you do not want transcoded twice. OGG and WebM cover in-browser recorders. If a codec will not play in Safari or Firefox, the server tries to remux or transcode to a playable M4A so the recipient still hears something.
